As OneZero’s founder, President, and CEO, Al Sowers manages the company’s strategic growth, organizational alignment, and long-term strategy. Mr. Sowers brings both military officer experience and more than 12 years of experience across the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a cybersecurity, information assurance, and security engineer. While Al is responsible for managing the overall operations and resources of OneZero, he is also instrumental in client relationship management and technical solutions.

Al was a 2008 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) where he earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering. He spent two years aboard the Coast Guard Cutter HAMILTON in San Diego, CA before coming back to Washington, D.C. to serve within the Coast Guard Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Information Technology (C4IT) community. After a tour at the Coast Guard Requirements office for C4IT, Al attended Virginia Tech where he received a Master of Science (M.S.) in Network Engineering with a focus on security and cryptography. Following graduate school, Al spent three years at Coast Guard Cyber Command (CGCYBERCOM) as the Lead for Maritime Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources. During his time at CGCYBERCOM, Al also stood watch on the Coast Guard’s Cybersecurity Operation Center as the Battle Watch Captain.

In 2017, Al was medically retired from the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Not finished serving his country, Al founded OneZero Solutions in the spring of 2017 to focus on supporting the federal government and military services in the cybersecurity and information assurance sector.

One of Al’s main goals with OneZero is to help support the professional advancement of military veterans – especially disabled vets. As a medically retired service member, he wants to help give back to those who may not be able to serve on active duty but want to continue serving their country.

Al is married to KC Sowers and lives in Alexandria, VA with his son, Hudson. He is an avid lover of all sports and enjoys basketball, football, golf, and dominating the leaderboard on Peloton! In 2020 Al was elected to the USCGA Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding performance leading the men’s basketball team to the Elite 8 in 2008.
