Player Rules

Scramble Format: On every hole, each member of the team may hit a tee shot. The team then selects one of the tee shots from which to play. All members of the team then hit from that position. This procedure is repeated until the ball is holed. There is no limit on the number of tee shots used by any one player. In the event of ties for any tournament prize, the order of finish will be determined by matching scorecards in the fashion recommended under Committee Procedures (5.5A.6) in the USGA Rules of Golf.

Selected Shot: Each team member must place his/her ball within one club length of the selected shot, no nearer to the hole. If the shot selected is played from a penalty area, bunker, rough (intermediate or regular), fairway or fringe of the green, the ball must be played from within one (1) club length of the shot selected, no nearer the hole, and must remain in the penalty area, bunker, rough (intermediate or regular), fairway, or fringe of the green.

Improving Lie of Ball (Putting Green): When putting, the ball must be placed within one putter head length from the mark, no closer to the hole. Once the ball is holed out, no further strokes count. In other words, don’t putt out until all players have had a chance to make the attempted putt.

MAXIMUM SCORE IS BOGEY – IF TEAM DOESN’T MAKE THE PAR PUTT, PLEASE PICK UP THE BALL AND PROCEED TO THE NEXT HOLE.

DO NOT play from “no mow” (tall grass areas) or enter them to retrieve golf balls. If all four golf balls of a group are in a “no mow” area, take a drop outside the “no mow” area nearest the best shot – NO PENALTY.

USGA Rules govern play with the following exceptions:

  • Out of Bounds – In addition to white stakes, course boundaries are defined by perimeter fences, internal fences bordering pools, tennis courts or buildings and the inside edge of roads & parking lot curbs. A ball coming to rest on or beyond a road or parking lot curb is out of bounds, even if it comes to rest on another part of the course that is in bounds for other holes.
  • Dropping Zones – Available as an additional option for balls entering penalty area on holes R-6, W-3 or B-4 at Arlington and on hole R-4 at Fairfax.
  • No Play Zone / Ground Under Repair – Obvious flower beds, whether marked or not.
  • No Play Zone / Young Trees – Identified by Ribbons (Official Guide, Model Local Rule E-10 in effect)
  • Mulched areas, including paths or trails covered with mulch or wood chips – Integral Object – Rule 16 does not apply – No Relief, however individual pieces of mulch or chips may be Loose Impediments (Rule 15.1)
Stone Wall (Arlington R-2) – Integral Object – Rule 16 does not apply – No Relief.
  • Deer Tracks – Ground Under Repair (Official Guide, Model Local Rule F-13 in effect)
  • Temporary Immovable Obstruction (TIO) – Greenside Fans, whether in the ground or on a trailer (Official Guide, Model Local Rule F-23 in effect)
  • Alternative to Stroke & Distance for Ball Out of Bounds or Lost outside a penalty area – Optional relief available (Official Guide, Model Local Rule E-5 in effect)
  • Aeration Holes—Relief available (Official Guide, Model Local Rule E—4 in effect)
  • Additional relief option with regard to obstructions located near putting green. Relief from interference by an immovable obstruction may be taken under Rule 16.1. The player also has these extra options to take relief when such immovable obstructions are close to the putting green and on the line of play. Ball in General Area. The player may take relief under 16.1b if any immovable obstruction is: a) Within 2 club-lengths of the putting green, and b) within 2 club lengths of the ball. No relief if the line of play is clearly unreasonable. (Model Rule F-5) (Takes affect 4.1.23)
  • In the ground or on a trailer (Appendix I, Part A, Section 4b, recommended Local Rule in effect.)

All course yardages are measured to the green centers:

  • Red: 100 yards
  • White: 150 yards
  • Blue: 200 yards
  • Black: 250 yards

Most Sprinkler Heads are identified with yardage to green center

Observe daily cart restrictions. Return carts to path as indicated by white posts.

DO NOT DRIVE CARTS IN THE NO-MOW AREAS

Lightning Kills!

  • Storm Warning is provided automatically by WeatherBug.
  • Single Sustained Horn – Dangerous Conditions Exist / Seek Shelter Immediately/ Course Closed
  • Three Intermittent Horns – All Clear / Resume Play
  • Penalty for Breach – Disqualification

Modification or exception to these Standing Local Rules may be necessary from time to time due to unusual or unexpected conditions. The most recent version, including modifications or exceptions will be posted and available in the Golf Shops and Starter Houses.
